How to Use Heatmaps to Improve Your Website
Google Analytics tells you that people are leaving. Heatmaps tell you why.
What Heatmaps Show
Click maps: Where visitors click (including where they click thinking something is a button — frustration clicks).
Scroll maps: How far visitors scroll. If 70% of visitors never see your CTA, it's too far down.
Session recordings: Real video replays of individual visitor sessions. Invaluable for finding confusing UX.
Free Tool: Microsoft Clarity
Microsoft Clarity is completely free and has no session limits.
- Sign up at clarity.microsoft.com
- Create a project for your site
- Copy the tracking script
- Add via Draftly Custom Code (before ``)
- Wait 48 hours for data to populate
What to Look For
High rage click zones: Visitors clicking rapidly on something that isn't clickable. Fix: make it clearly interactive or remove the confusion.
Low scroll depth: If users aren't scrolling past the fold, your hero isn't compelling enough. Test a new headline.
CTA ignored: If the CTA button isn't being clicked, move it up the page or change its visual prominence.
Monthly Review
Spend 30 minutes per month watching 10 session recordings. You'll spot patterns that no analytics report will surface.
