What Technical SEO Is — and Why It Matters
Technical SEO refers to the behind-the-scenes elements of a website that affect Google's ability to crawl, index, and rank it. Unlike content SEO (what you write) or off-page SEO (who links to you), technical SEO is about the infrastructure of the website itself.
A website with excellent content and strong backlinks can still rank poorly if technical issues prevent Google from properly reading and serving that content.
The 2026 Technical SEO Checklist
Indexation
- All important pages are included in sitemap.xml and submitted to Google Search Console
- No important pages blocked in robots.txt
- No accidental `noindex` tags on important pages
- Canonical tags are correctly set to prevent duplicate content
Speed and Core Web Vitals
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) under 2.5 seconds
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) under 0.1
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP) under 200ms
- Images converted to WebP or AVIF format
- Images lazy-loaded below the fold
- CSS and JavaScript minified and deferred where possible
Mobile
- Google Mobile-Friendly Test passes
- Tap targets (buttons, links) at minimum 48px height
- No horizontal scrolling on mobile
- Font sizes readable at 16px+ on mobile
HTTPS and Security
- SSL certificate valid and not expiring within 30 days
- HTTP redirects to HTTPS (no mixed content)
- No browser security warnings
Structured Data
- LocalBusiness schema with correct NAP, coordinates, and opening hours
- FAQ schema on FAQ pages
- Product schema on product pages
- Breadcrumb schema on interior pages
- Schema validated at schema.org/validator with no errors
Crawlability
- Internal links use absolute URLs, not relative
- No broken internal links (check with Screaming Frog or Ahrefs)
- No redirect chains longer than 2 hops
- 404 page is customised and helpful
