The Post-Flat Era
Web design spent most of 2014–2022 in a flat, minimalist phase — white backgrounds, thin fonts, grid layouts, and restrained animation. This aesthetic was a reaction to the skeuomorphic excesses of the iPhone era, and it served the industry well for a decade.
But the flat era is ending. Driven by three converging forces — AI generation tools, improved browser graphics capabilities, and the spatial computing influence of Apple Vision Pro — web design is entering a richer, more dimensional period. 2027 will be the year these trends move from experimental to mainstream.
Trend 1: Scroll-Choreographed Environments
The most significant shift is the move from 'pages' to 'environments'. Rather than a user reading information organised on a page, they travel through a digital space where each scroll movement advances a narrative. Products emerge from darkness. Text assembles from components. Sections transition through portals rather than simple page breaks.
This trend is directly enabled by GSAP ScrollTrigger, CSS Scroll-Driven Animations (now natively supported in all major browsers), and AI generation tools that can create these experiences from a prompt.
Trend 2: AI-Native Generation
By 2027, the expectation will shift: websites that look like they were designed will be the exception, not the norm. The question will no longer be 'did an AI make this?' but 'which AI made this and how good is it?'
The competitive advantage will be tools that generate sites with genuine creative intelligence — understanding vertical, brand tone, and experience design principles — rather than tools that produce template variations.
Trend 3: Contextual Personalisation
As device sensors improve and AI inference gets faster, websites will increasingly personalise in real time — serving a different hero message to a visitor arriving from a LinkedIn ad versus organic search, or adjusting the primary CTA based on visit history.
Trend 4: Ambient Commerce
The clear line between content website and e-commerce is blurring. Products will surface contextually within editorial content. A restaurant website will offer immediate reservation within the food photography gallery. A software company's case study will embed a live product trial. Commerce becomes ambient rather than separate.
Trend 5: Micro-Interaction Richness
As scroll-based animations become standard, the differentiator will move to micro-interactions — the response of buttons to hover, the texture of cursor movement, the way menu items react. These small interactions create the sense of quality that elevates a website from functional to delightful.
Staying Ahead
Builders that combine AI generation with 3D immersive capabilities are positioned at the intersection of all five trends. Draftly's roadmap is built around exactly this — read our 3D Builder overview to see where these trends are heading.
