Technical SEO Checklist 2026: Fix These 12 Issues First

Technical SEO issues don't announce themselves. They silently prevent your content from ranking.

Critical Issues (Fix First)

1. HTTPS

All pages must serve over HTTPS. Use SSL Labs to check: every page should return an A or A+ rating.

2. Mobile Usability

Run your URL through Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. Zero issues should remain unfixed.

3. Crawlability

Check robots.txt doesn't accidentally block important pages. Check Search Console for crawl errors.

4. Canonical Tags

Every page should have a canonical tag pointing to the preferred URL. Missing canonicals cause duplicate content issues.

5. XML Sitemap

Ensure your sitemap is submitted in Search Console and contains only indexable, non-redirected URLs.

Performance Issues

6. Core Web Vitals

LCP < 2.5s, CLS < 0.1, FID < 100ms. Check in Search Console under Core Web Vitals.

7. Image Optimisation

Every image should have alt text, be in WebP format, and be appropriately sized.

8. Render-Blocking Resources

Identify and defer or eliminate render-blocking JavaScript and CSS.

Structure Issues

9. Heading Hierarchy

One H1 per page. H2s for main sections. H3s for subsections. Never skip levels.

10. Internal Linking

Orphan pages (pages with no internal links pointing to them) don't rank. Every page should be linked from at least one other page.

11. URL Structure

URLs should be short, descriptive, and lowercase with hyphens. Avoid parameters and numbers where possible.

12. Structured Data

Add Schema markup for your business type. LocalBusiness, Product, FAQ, and Article schemas have direct ranking benefits.
