SEO Competitor Analysis: Find the Gaps You Can Win
Your competitors have already done the hard work of proving what keywords convert. Use their data to shortcut your strategy.
Step 1 — Identify Your Real SEO Competitors
Your SEO competitors are not necessarily your business competitors. They're the sites that rank for the keywords you want.
Search your top 5 target keywords. The consistent top-ranking sites are your SEO competitors to analyse.
Step 2 — What to Look For
Keywords they rank for that you don't:
Use Ubersuggest (free) or Ahrefs: enter their domain → Organic Keywords → filter by keywords your domain doesn't rank for. These are your gap opportunities.
Their top-traffic pages:
Same tools: Top Pages report. Understand which content formats drive their traffic — long-form guides, short posts, comparison pages, tools?
Their backlink profile:
Where do their links come from? Are these sources you can get links from too?
Step 3 — Prioritise Your Gaps
Not all gaps are worth filling. Prioritise:
- Keywords with clear commercial intent
- Keywords where their ranking page has low quality (thin content, old date)
- Keywords in your demonstrated area of expertise
Step 4 — Execute
Create content that's demonstrably better than the ranking page:
- More comprehensive
- More recent
- More specific to the Indian context
- With original data or case study
Tracking
Use Google Search Console to track ranking movement for your target keywords. Competitor analysis is quarterly work, not a one-time task.
