Schema Markup Guide: Get Rich Results and Stand Out in Search

Rich results are the enhanced Google listings that show star ratings, prices, FAQs, event dates, or breadcrumbs directly in the search results. They get significantly more clicks than standard blue links.

Schema markup is how you tell Google you're eligible for rich results. And yet, most websites — including many professionally built ones — don't have it.

What Schema Markup Does

Schema markup (technically called structured data) is code added to your webpage that tells Google exactly what your content represents. Instead of Google inferring that a number on your page is a price, you explicitly tell it: "This is the price of this product, in Indian Rupees."

Google uses this to:

  • Understand your content more accurately

  • Display rich results when your page ranks for a relevant query

  • Power voice search answers and AI-generated summaries

The Schema Types That Matter Most

LocalBusiness

For any business with a physical location or service area. Enables Google to show your business details directly in results.

Key fields: name, address, telephone, openingHours, priceRange, geo coordinates

Product

For e-commerce product pages. Enables price, availability, and review stars in results.

Key fields: name, image, description, offers (price, currency, availability), aggregateRating

FAQPage

For pages with FAQ sections. Enables the expandable FAQ directly in search results — dramatically increases click-through.

Key fields: mainEntity (array of Question/Answer pairs)

Article / BlogPosting

For blog posts and news articles. Enables headline, image, and author attribution in results.

Key fields: headline, image, datePublished, dateModified, author

BreadcrumbList

Shows the page hierarchy in results (Home > Blog > SEO > Schema Markup). Helps with navigation and CTR.

Implementation: JSON-LD Format

Google recommends JSON-LD format, placed in a script tag in your page's head:

For a local restaurant:
```json
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Restaurant",
"name": "Tandoori Nights",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "123 Linking Road",
"addressLocality": "Bandra West",
"addressRegion": "Mumbai",
"postalCode": "400050",
"addressCountry": "IN"
},
"telephone": "+91 22 1234 5678",
"servesCuisine": "North Indian",
"priceRange": "₹₹"
}
```

Testing Your Schema

After adding schema, validate it with:

  • Google Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results) — checks eligibility for rich results

  • Schema Markup Validator (validator.schema.org) — checks for errors

The LocalBusiness schema uses your WhatsApp number as the telephone field if provided in settings.
