Building a Restaurant Website That Fills Tables in India
The average Indian restaurant website was designed in 2014, doesn't work on mobile, has a PDF menu that takes 30 seconds to load, and has no way to book a table. This is a massive opportunity for restaurants that do it differently.
What a Restaurant Website Should Do
A restaurant website in 2025 has four jobs:
- Establish appetite: Make visitors want to eat your food before they've set foot in the restaurant
- Provide information: Location, hours, menu, price range — the basics done right
- Convert browsers: Give them an easy next action — book a table or order online
- Build trust: Reviews, story, photos of the actual space and food
The Photographs Are Everything
In restaurant marketing, food photography is not optional. A restaurant with great photography outperforms one with identical food and a better location, because the decision to try a new place is emotional and visual.
What you need:
- Hero shot: your most beautiful dish or a signature dish, professional lighting
- Ambiance shots: the interior during service, when it looks its best
- People shots: if your restaurant has a social/gathering character, people enjoying themselves
- Menu items: your top 5-6 dishes, well-lit
If you can't afford a professional photographer for everything, hire one for the hero shot and take decent smartphone photos for the rest. Good natural light and a clean background go a long way.
Menu: Stop Using PDFs
A PDF menu is the restaurant website equivalent of making customers fill out a paper form. On mobile, it's genuinely painful.
Your menu should be HTML text on the page — searchable, readable, accessible. For long menus, use categories as anchors. Include prices.
Side benefit: HTML menus get indexed by Google. If someone searches "restaurant with thali under 300 rupees Koramangala," your menu page can appear.
Reservations: Make It Frictionless
The ideal reservation flow: visitor sees a table they want → clicks "Book a Table" → picks date/time/party size → gets confirmed in 30 seconds.
Options for this:
- Draftly + Calendly: Embed a Calendly booking form configured for table reservations
- WhatsApp: A "Book via WhatsApp" button that opens a pre-filled message — lower-tech but surprisingly effective
- Third-party: EazyDiner, DineOut integrations if you're listed there
At minimum, have a WhatsApp button with a message like: "Hi, I'd like to book a table for [date] at [time] for [people]."
Local SEO for Restaurants
The single most important thing for restaurant visibility in India:
- Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile
- Upload photos regularly (weekly is not too often)
- Respond to every review
- Keep hours and holiday schedules updated
This gets you into the Google Map Pack — the three restaurants that appear on the map at the top of local search results. Appearing there consistently doubles or triples walk-in traffic.
What High-Converting Restaurant Sites Include
- Full-screen hero with appetising photography
- Short "about" section — your story in 3-4 sentences
- Featured dishes section (not the full menu) to build appetite
- Full menu (HTML, not PDF)
- Location with Google Maps embed
- Hours (including current status — open/closed)
- Phone + WhatsApp contact
- Reservation link or button
- Reviews section (Google reviews embed or testimonials)
