(I)
Recovered from a sealed alcove beneath the Ashfold kiln floor. The figure holds a river stone it was never carved to hold; the hands were opened later, by another maker, for a reason no ledger records.

A threshold figure, glazed to the sheen of poured milk and set on black marble by its first owner, who believed the stone kept the object honest. It has not been moved from that plinth since 1948.
The bell is silent. It was cast without a clapper.
(III)
Raku-fired in a single winter firing and crowned in cast brass. The antlers are not decoration but measurement: nine tines for nine winters kept, added one at a time by a hand that grew steadily less certain.
Crackle mapped annually. The glaze is still moving.
(IV)
Broken in transit, repaired in gold, and thereafter valued at four times its insured worth. The vessel it carries has never been opened; the seam that runs beneath its arm is the only honest thing about it.
Contents undeclared. Weight suggests they exist.
(V)
Alabaster, kneeling, drawing a single ochre thread from a spool that is not depicted. The pose was copied from a funerary relief; the thread was the sculptor's own addition, and the only part she signed.
Thread replaced twice. Colour matched by eye.
(VI)
A second study of the first entry, fired from the same clay body and deliberately underglazed. Held apart from its twin for eighty years on the instruction of a collector who would not say which of the two was made first.
Reunited with OA·001·H in 1991. Neither was catalogued as a copy.
(VII)
The final entry is not a figure but a detail: the crown of the third, photographed in the hour the gallery keeps dark. The Assembly holds that an object seen only in shadow is still an object, and must be numbered.
Lit for eleven minutes each day. Never longer.
Article III — On Keeping
An object becomes an artefact the moment
someone decides it must outlive them.
Everything after that is bookkeeping.
The Assembly keeps one room and lets the light do the curation. For eleven minutes each evening the sun crosses the stair and every object in the catalogue is, briefly, the same object.
Viewing by written request. No photography. No exceptions.
